GEOLOGY
A BRIEF PROFILE
The 75 years old Aided College (Autonomous), Eluru has a
strong, committed, highly qualified and experience staff in the Department of
Geology. The Department was established in 1977 with an undergraduate course B.Sc. as
Geology the main subject. The Department
got Aided status by UGC for the course B.Sc. with combination of Mathematics,
Physics and Geology and approved to increasing intake capacity of students from
12 to 24 and then to 48. Choice Base Credit System (CBCS) traduced in 2016. Later in 2017,
started another B.Sc. course with combination of Mathematics, Geology and
Computer Science to fulfil the computational skills in Geological, Remote
Sensing (RS) and GIS fields. Moreover,
in 2020, started B. Voc in Remote Sensing and GIS to train the students in
advance aspects in Special technology.
Ø To enhance the students´ theory and
practicals knowledge in curriculum and co-curriculum and extra-curriculum
aspects, started GEOLOGY CLUB in 2020, a student centric platform for planning,
implementing, executing, organizing the events to improving innovative
thoughts, creative activities and leadership qualities in students.
Ø The alumni of the Department are wide
spread all over the world in various capacities ranging from In-charge
Vice-Chancellor to University and Academicians in different universities,
Colleges and Schools; Scientists in
CERN, Switzerland and other organizations globally; and as Geologists ranging
from junior to Senior scientist cadre in Central and State Laboratories,
Organizations (like GSI, ONGC etc.), Departments (like CGWB, AP State
Department of Mines & Geology, AP Groundwater Department etc.); as Field
Geologists in International and National Companies; Civil Servants in State and
Central Governments, IAS and IPS Officers, Defense and Law & Order; in
Business and entrepreneurship and in others fields.
Ø The Department have well equipped 3
Geological laboratories, 3 dedicated classrooms, one Museum, one e-classroom
and department Library. Laboratories equipped with Geological, Geochemical,
geophysical equipments for conducting experiments of the curriculum; geological
maps, charts, 3D wooden and glass models, crystal and lattice structures, field
trip tools, Remote Sensing Imageries, GPSs and other accessories.
Ø The infrastructural facilities and
teaching & learning process offer good academic plan of activities in every
academic year duly involving the students for Field exposure and Organizational
training programmes, capacity building, value-oriented programmes conducted by
the department.
Ø Add-on programme on Environmental
Geology, Disaster Management, Water Analysis and Cartography are conducing in a
regular pattern. The department
regularly conducting fieldtrips, student seminars, group discussions, best
practices (quizzes, scientific article review, preparation of 3D models of
geology etc.). Final semester Geology
cluster students are working on project works on different aspects of
Environmental Geology.
Ø The students of Geology actively
involved in all departmental and Institutional curricular and co-curricular and
extra-curricular activities.
Ø The progression of the students is
highly remarkable compared to other streams.
80% of students opt for higher education and peruse their further
studies in different universities all over the country.
Ø Presently 2 experience teaching faculty
and 1 non-teaching faculty are working in the department; two Retd. Scientists
are giving their services as guest lectures for one week to two weeks modules
for semester for field exposure for students.
Ø One of Retired faculty Dr. C Ravi
received Best Teacher Award by the Andhra Pradesh State Government. Another Retired faculty P C Swaroop is a
Mentor in Earth Science, INSPIRE, DST since 2012 and coordinator for IQAC of
our college from 2004 to 2017 and he is an advisor for couple of NAAC
Accredited Autonomous colleges.
Ø The present HOD, Dr. S S K Chaitanya is
a NAAC core committee member since 2019.
